PRODUCTION- Session 5

We had the equipment booked ready to film yesterday, unfortunately the lead model in the other shoot could not make the shoot. This was one of the last days we could film and put the group in a dilemma. However we wanted to get some shots done to ensure we had more footage for Hennesha to edit even if it was just a rough copy and didnt have the same model so we therefore continued with filming.

We have been contacting the models and dancers through a group chat Katie made. This has helped us in being organised and seeing when the models and dancers are free. We have also made a separate group chat with Hennesha, me, Katie and Danit which again has helped with organising equipment and schedules.

With this filming we decided to use a studio to film the dance scenes to see how they would look on camera. We used LED lights with different colours to create an atmosphere and used a black background to keep it neutral and to make sure the colours came out on camera. Overall filming went very well.

The location we have used is not something we had planned to use however we believed it was important to work on the dance in a studio and get some footage instead of trying to record on location something that wouldn’t be of a good quality for Hennesha to edit. The dance Katie had choreographed worked extremely well and looked great on camera. And the lights sparked more ideas of what we could use in the final edit of our music video.
On this shoot Katie worked on the main camera on a tripod to make sure the shot was stable and steady and me and Danit took terns in using the other camera to get extra shots in a shorter amount of time if only Katie was filming. Me and Danit also used the lights and changed their color throughout. Meanwhile Hennesha was working on the edit of the other footage we had filmed.

Today we have decided to do more filming to again make sure we get footage to edit. One of the dancers Lewis has been very reliable throughout filming and has the best ability to pick up the routine. We therefore decided to ask Lewis to be our main model for some of our shoots. We therefore filmed the start of the music video today with Lewis as our main model. We have yet decided whether we intend to use Lewis as the main model in our final edit. The footage we have got has really helped Hennesha to be able to edit in and get a clearer image of what our final edit will look like and also consider things we can change.

In this shoot Hennesha and Danit worked on lighting, Katie worked on camera and I worked on music and directing Lewis on what he would be doing, however we all worked well together to help direct Lewis on his moves (as Katie is a dancer).

Our deadline for our first edit is this Friday so we all intend to help Hennesha with any editing she needs and plan future filming dates. We also need to have a meeting to discuss which model we would like to ask to do our final edit.

PRODUCTION- Tuesday 19th December - camera

In today's two hour recording session, we managed to get many of our shots filmed. I feel like we were able to do this as we are all starting to get a much better understanding of how the camera works and what kind of camera shots give off the best views of our models. We also used different settings within our piece today rather than being stationary like in previous sessions so the camera had to be adjusted to make sure that it wasn't too dark and also the focus was correct.

One part in particular I believe worked really well was when Lewis, our lead, was against the full length windows and he became a silhouette as this worked really well with the camera. Similarly was when he was standing in front of the lightsaber lights it gave an overall glow to the room. This was not the desired effect as we again wanted a silhouette but after looking back on the recorded footage, we decided the dancing actually looked better with the glow of the lights.

One section that was hard to get a good shot on was when Lewis was walking down the corridor due to trying to keep the lighting strong without it being in the camera shot. We resolved this by  using the setting to hide where the lights were being kept and also used natural lighting to give the lighting a more real look to it on the camera.

Here is a link to the photos and videos that were taken. All the footage will be added into here.

PRODUCTION- DELAY ON FILMING

Unfortunately as a group we were unable to film again today for our music video. Although we had hired out the equipment and were all prepared for filming, due to weather conditions being heavy show BOA was closed yesterday.

This means we are extremely behind on recording for our music video as we only have a certain time frame to record in.

We need to make sure we are filming over school hours next Monday to ensure we get everything done for the video.

Hopefully the snow clears up and the conditions are acceptable for us to film outside on location next week. If this happens again we will have to look into if there are any other shots we can get done until the conditions improve.

PRODUCTION- Session 4

Unfortunately we were not able to film today. This was due to us not being able to hire out the equipment we needed for shooting. Due to this I have re scheduled for next Monday. I have booked equipment for filming, I have booked:
A Canon 24-105m lens to use for zoom
A 50m lens
2 canon 760D cameras
1 Tripod
1 Shoulder support rig

On filming before we did not book a tripod which we felt was difficult to get certain shots. I therefore decided to hire out a tripod for Katie to use.

I have also arranged with dancers and models this date for filming so everyone is on board.

This does mean we will be behind on filming however, I will ensure we spend extra time filming on Monday to make sure we do not fall behind on our deadline.

For the rest of today I watched the dancing rehearsals and directed the dancers on how to act. I also discussed with Danit on costume and her ideas for location.

PRODUCTION- Session 3

Today we filmed our first scenes for our music video. The location we filmed in was the BOA studio like we had planned. We managed to shoot the photographer scene, the makeup scene and also got some added shots which we may consider to use with the video also.

Katie filmed the shots- We did not book out a tripod due to the shots we were taking however, we learnt that Katie's arms became tired as we were filming for quite a long time. This was something we should have considered and will defiantly consider for our next filming session. Katie also helped set up the studio to help filming.

Danait did the models hair and makeup- Danait brought in her own clothes for the model and also did her makeup and hair before shooting. She also helped to dress the others in the video to ensure they looked right for the part.

Hennesha- Hennesha ensured she was helping the team at all time by giving imput, holding lighting and playing the music as well as bringing in things from home to help with the shoot.

Me- During this I made sure I was giving the models direction throughout as well as giving my imput with filming and lighting and scene changes. I also focused on keeping time and being organised with filming. This is something I hope to change for the next session as we did find ourselves running out of time towards the end of the shoot. I will therefore make sure next time we have more hours to film to make sure we are getting the right shots for Hennesha to edit. I also helped set up the studio to start filming.

For our next session we are planning to go off site to film more for the video such as the girl walking down the street with headphones and the dancing scene.
Please see photos below from todays session.

PRODUCTION- Session 2

Today we met to audition people to dance for our video. The location we auditioned in was a dance studio in BOA. The audition was successful we had a large group of people show and we chose on 3 people to perform alongside our model.

Katie focused on where the dancers would be in terms of the camera as well as choreographing the dance routine and teaching it to the people who were auditioning. Danait discussed with the dancers regarding the costume they'd be wearing as well as the various location we'd be filming in. She ensured that the costume chosen was durable as well as flexible so that it wouldn't restrict their dancing. Hennesha was in the room helping us to choose what dancers would work best for our video. I was focusing on how this would look on camera and what style of dancers we needed for the video as well as making sure it was all organised.

For our next session we hope to record the studio scenes with our model and dancers filming the photographer scene and makeup scene.

Please see below for images of today's session.

PRODUCTION- Session 1

Today we carried out a test shoot for out music video. We hired out cameras and equipment we had planned to use to test out what possible shots would look like for the video. The location we did this in was our studio within in BOA, this is because many of our scenes will be filmed in there for the photography scene, the makeup scene and also for images for our digi-pak.

When doing this camera woman Katie focused on key angles to see which looked good for the video and if they would work in terms of editing when Hennesha comes to editing it it will look effective. During this Danait focused on the hair makeup and costume of the model brainstorming possible ideas as well as choosing the location within the studio. She also took a key role ensuring that the lighting was suitable as well as flattering for the model. I focused on directing the model and telling her where to go as well as directing the rest of the group throughout.

From this session we got a better understanding of the equipment and how it works as well as time in the space so we are fully prepared when it comes to filming. We learnt that we need to use a special lens to ensure we are getting the best shots with the best quality and in focus as this was a difficulty we had in today's session.

For our next session we are meeting with potential dancers to audition them for the video.
Please see images below of today's session.

RESEARCH &PLANNING: Layout Design-DIGIPAK & Magazine Advert

RESEARCH AND PLANNING- Layout design-Digi pak

By Izzy Albutt
DIGI PAK PLAN AND LAYOUT- The digi pak very similar to the magazine will be very bright and colourful to meet the questionnaire feedback and also resemble the pop genre. It will heavily feature the artist and the direction of the album. It is important that the artist is featured as it is their album and their target audience will want to see them on the album and know it is theirs when going to buy it. From my digi pak analysis on Katy Perrys 'Teenage Dream' she had a clear direction of the album which was candy canes and a dream world. The theme of this album is bright colours and fun and upbeat just like the song 'Sorry Not Sorry'. The bright colours will reflect the mood of the song and the direction we are choosing to go with the video.

FRONT COVER- The front cover will feature the artists name at the top with a main image and the album name. I want to keep the front cover simple, I want the typography to be bold and eye catching and the main image to be of the artist and it to also be colourful to stand out. The main image will be of the artist and I want her as an inspiration to her fans wearing fashionable clothes with makeup on to show a stereotypical look of pop and be something her fans can relate to. This will be the first thing the audience will see when picking up the digi-pak so it is therefore important that it stands out to the audience and also amongst other digi-paks.

BACK COVER- The back cover will have the track list of the album. Very similar to the digi-pak I researched into (Katy Perry) I want the songs all in different colours to create a bright overall finish to the back cover. It is stereotypical to have the tracklist on the back so I might consider how I can make mine different to all others to attract a wider audience. This might be more images of the artist of images from the videos from the album, or potentially quotes from the artist. From our questionnaire feedback our target audience said pictures attracted them the most to a digi-pak. Having many photos included will therefore attract more people. There will also be companies involved with the album on the back to reference their involvement in the album. This is something all albums do.

INSIDE- Inside the album will be again the album name with images of the artist and images that are upcoming with potential videos. The image will all be stereotypically pop and will mainly feature the artist. The artist will be in many different costumes to inspire her fans. It might be something to consider giving the album buyer a free image of the artist within the digi-pak to add more of a reason for the target audience to want to buy it.  The images will be bright and colourful to reflect the genre of pop and will be (like said previously) mainly with the artist however will also be group pictures of dancers as this is something our target audience liked from our questionnaire analysis.

INSIDE DISK- The disk (like the album) will be bright and colourful (potentially pastel as that is the favourite colour of the target audience). It will also have the album name and the artist on their to again show the album name and the artist (as it is their CD).

RESEARCH AND PLANNING- Layout design- Magazine Advert

By Izzy Albutt

If we have a background it will be bright pastel colours. We are using pastel colours as from feedback of our questionnaire the audience preferred pastel colours. The bright colours also represent the genre of our music video (pop) and reflects our music video being fun and upbeat. We want the artist to be the main focus of the magazine as that is what will attract the target audience and make them want to buy the album/watch the video.

The artists name is something that is on most digi-paks to show the target audience whos album it is. It will attract the audience even more and make them want the album. If a person was going to buy this album they would look for the artists name or picture when looking so it is important that it is bold and eye catching.

The main image is the most important part of the digi-pak as it gives the vibe and image of the album and gives an idea of the music. It is therefore important that the image we uses reflects the music video and genre.

The name of the album needs to be there as it separates it from the other work the artist has done. It also will again give an image to the album and a direction which will attract other music listeners that arent the artists biggest fans. We need to come up with a name that will appeal to the target audience but also others.

Having the reviews within the digi-pak is effective as it shows people why they should be buying the album. With it being 5 stars that will intrigue the target audience and make them more inclined to purchase it. Having the platforms there also shows other ways to access the music which also advertises the music to music listeners that perhaps prefer to listen to music via apps rather than a CD.

RESEARCH & PLANNING- Recces

RESEARCHING & PLANNING- Magazine Advert Layout Plan

Backdrop colours. If we do not use these colours then we would have a light blue or muted green backdrop behind the artist. The idea of the colour came from looking at the questionnaire results as our target audience said they like bright colours or pastel colours.

The artist name is going to be above the song title’s name. The artist will have her name wrote in a decorative or sans serif font almost like a signature to show that this is her song. The song name is going to be bigger than her name because the magazine will be promoting a new song and as it is not known very well having it in a larger font will draw more attention to it. The release date will also be next to the song as it is a something conventional to the pop genre. I am using this layout as this is what I saw on Beyoncé's magazine where she is promoting perfume that her name is at the top of the page. I like the idea of the artists name overlapping the image as this is what i saw in the magazine i analysed and i believed it was effective.

Around the main image there will be reviews and a short description as shown by my layout plan. This will provide the audience with some understanding of the song and a reason to by the digipak or download the song. The main image will most likely be wearing clothing in which enchants her figure as after we get the results back for the questionnaire on the magazine and Digipack we found out that 62.1% are females. After also looking into the psychographics and demographics of a typical audience we realised that these females would like to see an artist on a magazine who has a nice figure as they will want something to inspire to be like. We surprisingly had 37.9% of males which also suggests they have an interest in female artists. Again from the genre research that I have done, I realise that these males are more likely to buy our products if there is a model that they find the artist sexually attractive.

As well the typography of the next on here will be the same as the digipack. I believe that we should have a more modern and stylized typography, as this is what people have requested from our questionnaire. However, I personally do not want to create a magazine or digipak using fonts like comic sans as i think it is too comedical and well known by our target audience. I would like a font that is modern and simple but is not as recognisable to them.

Additionally we have social media advertisements to itunes, spotify, youtube and Deezer to promote the music video and tell the audience where to find it. This is effective because when they have watched it or had access to it they can share it with other creating mass advertising. I believed this was a good idea, not only because it was conventional, but because our questionnaire results came mostly from students and from my research i am aware that a lot of students use social media. Therefore, having our models music on a different social media platforms would be the best way of promoting it to them. When looking at other magazines adverts I realised that not many people did this but as my artist is not that know i am going to use this magazine to promote it. I realise that i am subverting most conventions but i believe doing this would be more benifisional.

Finally having the record label and other information who were involved in the process is conventional of a pop genre which is why we plan to use it.

We are basing a lot of our magazine off the questionnaire results from our target audience as they are our target and we aim to please them.

RESEARCH & PLANNING - Digipak and magazine layout design

Within the colour scheme, I have gone for pastel colours in the colours blue and pink. These colours are popular within my target audience so I believe it would become more appealing to look at. They also conform to the pop genre and was proven popular through the answers of our questionnaire. I have also used minimal text on my digipak as I didn't want it to look too cluttered and also teenagers and young adults are stereotyped as not liking to read so it might become a reason to not look at the CD. The typography will be in a sans serif font so that it appeals more to the teenage target audience. The photography on the front cover will be the artist posing in the middle underneath the title in a naturalistic pose in order for the artist. In regards to professional digipaks, I am taking inspiration from both Little Mix's 'Get Weird' and Ariana Grande 'Dangerous Woman'.

RESEARCH AND PLANNING-RISK ASSESSMENT

There are many risks with this project which I have identified and decided how they can be avoided. One risk is the studio, we are recording on location and also in a studio. There are many risks with the studio such as lighting and equipment possibly falling on people. This could happen if someone does not set up the equipment properly. It is therefore important that we ensure we are setting up the equipment correctly. The chances of this happening are remote and if it does happen the injury's would be marginal meaning it is a medium risk. Other than setting up the equipment correctly another thing we can do to avoid this happening is making sure the team are aware of where potential dangers are within the studio and making sure they stay away from possible injuries. See below for more risks and the risk matrix which I have used to base my risks from to judge how serious the injury could be.

PRODUCTION MEETING (Researching & Planning) #3

PRESENT: Henneha, Dannit, Izzy, Katie
APOLOGIES: n/a

AREAS FOR DISCUSSION

  • Looking into what song we are going to use
We looked into a lot of song and took inspiration, these are some of the songs we looked into.

We looked at this song, we really liked it as it was a pop song and followed the structure of one very well. However, Hennesha and Katie suggested that the dancing may be a little hard and we did not know where to put in the dancing. Dannit and Izzy suggested we looked int some pop song with dance and see what they do. Therefore we looked into theses songs.
After seeing these Hennesha had the idea of splitting the screen and trying to play them in sync. From doing the Dannit, Izzay and Katie could see some possible places where we could have dancing and how we could do it. Therefore knowing that it is possible we chose to do the song Sorry Not Sorry - By Demi Lavato

  • Izzy's feedback from the questionnaire analysis
We were all told and informed what the audiences liked and what we should included in our music video my looking at the analysis that Izzy had done, so that we could all have it in the back of our minds when we did these other tasks

  • Allocation of tasks
Storyboard (Izzy and Dannit)
Script (Katie)
Shot List (Hennesha)

RESEARCH & PLANNING - Music Video Analysis

Music video analysis - youtube video script

The music video I am going to be analysing is Ariana Grande’s song ‘Focus’. This is a music video that sticks to the stereotypes of a pop music video and uses a lot of dance and is based heavily off the director’s artistic approach.

First, I will be analysing the mise-en-scene. There is lots of differents sets and lighting used within the music video which keeps the audiences engaged throughout. The setting is very simplistic, each one is a block colour and often just has Ariana Grande in small shape. Each of these shots uses the lighting in order to create shadows or show off the artist with bright lighting. The shadow effects show off the figures of Ariana and the other dancers and is used for male gaze theory.

Next, I will be Analysing the sound. The music itself is computer generated and has a repetitive sound to it. The first line in the lyrics is 'I know what I came to do and that ain't gonna change.' The iconic sign of colloquial language is recognisable to the audience, for example it says ‘gonna’ instead of ‘going to’. This makes the audience relate to it more as they use this language on a daily basis and find it sounds more natural to say for them.
The preferred reading of this line in the song would be that Ariana Grande is talking about that she is not only aiming to entertain, but to love and share everything with the world and help to make people feel empowered and happy. I can see this as Ariana Grande says in an interview.
The first line of ‘Focus’ is: ‘I know what I came to do and that ain’t
gonna change.’ What I came here to do in this world is not only to entertain but to love, to share, to listen, to improve, to learn, to share music, to share experience, to share feelings, to make people feel happy and empowered.
However, the oppositional reading of this is that the song is sexualising what she is saying and the audience could be thinking that all she has on her mind. The lyrics that infer this are the chorus where it says ‘focus on me, you know I like it when you focus on me’ as to many listeners, that would mean focus in a relationship and people wouldn’t necessarily get the Idea that Ariana Grande and the producers were aiming for.

The camera angles tend to be close ups or long shots. The close ups suggest sensuality and that Grande is flirtatious with audience members, further playing on the male gaze theory within the video. The camera brings out the focus on the eyes on the lips and these will entice male audience members as they are the facial features they are drawn to, she is also biting her lip and ‘batting her eyelashes’ which are seen as quite sexual movements. The long shots in the video are often when Ariana is dancing and the camera is showing the whole of her body. This along with the revealing and short outfits creates an oppositional reading of having to dress in very little amounts of clothing and being sensual to younger audiences. The preferred reading of this however is that they are just playful and costumes that are, as the audiences would say, ‘cute’ and ‘fun’.

Wednesday 5 July 2017

RESEARCH & PLANNING - Digipak Analysis

The front cover clearly wants to encode to the audience the idea of Katy Perry's world and what she wants to show. This can be seen through the typography and the fact she is lying on candyfloss which is clearly a dream. However an audience may decode that she is sexualising herself being naked on the cloud. The audience may not be attracted to the digi-pak due to it being her world but because she is seen as a sex symbol.

HDIK Introduction

We are Hennesha, Danait, Izzy, and Katie and we are HDIK.
Below are the roles in our group.

Director- Izzy will be taking the role of director. I am interested in directing as I like taking the leadership role in tasks and believe I work well with other people. In my music magazine I believe I worked well with my models and how to guide them to give me what I would like for my final project. I believe I will take leadership but also contribute to other aspects of the video such as editing, mise en scene and camera and we will all work as a team depending on our strengths and weaknesses.

Camera- Katie will be taking the role of camera man. I will take into consideration which will be the best shots and what angles will help to create meaning within the video. I will work alongside Izzy and help on deciding on which scenes would help to create the best story line for our video. I will also incorporate mise en scene as I will need to know about the lighting ideas and the settings and backdrops they have thought to use.

Editing- Hennesha will be taking the role of editor. I have always been interested in the editing of a music video, and now being given the opportunity to i am quite excited. I have used Imovie before to edit videos that i have done at home but nothing really as serious as this. I am excited to use new editing software. I believe that my strengths within media are having creative ideas. I really love trying new ideas to my project to see what i can do. This is a reason my i believe i would be good at editing. In terms as things i feel like i need to improve in media is my written work in terms of terminology and content.

Mise En Scene-
